From the Rift Valley to the World: How Enda Runs with Kenyan Culture

Since the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Kenyan have dominated the middle- and long-distance events in athletics and have exhibited comparable dominance in international cross-country and road-racing competitions including half and full marathons. Several factors have been proposed to explain the extraordinary success of the Kenyan and Ethiopian distance runners, including (1) genetic predisposition, (2) development of a high maximal oxygen uptake as a result of extensive walking and running at an early age, (3) relatively high hemoglobin and hematocrit, (4) development of good metabolic "economy/efficiency" based on somatotype and lower limb characteristics, (5) favorable skeletal-muscle-fiber composition and oxidative enzyme profile, (6) traditional Kenyan/Ethiopian diet, (7) living and training at altitude, and (8) motivation to achieve economic success.

Some of these factors have been examined objectively in the laboratory and field, whereas others have been evaluated from an observational perspective.  Researchers, Randal Wilber and Yannis Pitsiladis, after examining previous studies concluded that Kenyan (and Ethiopian) distance-running success is not based on a unique genetic or physiological characteristic. Rather, it appears to be the result of favorable somatotypical characteristics lending to exceptional biomechanical and metabolic economy/efficiency; chronic exposure to altitude in combination with moderate-volume, high-intensity training (live high + train high), and a strong psychological motivation to succeed athletically for the purpose of economic and social advancement. These conclusions highlight the role of the environment as well as the individual motivation for personal, social and economic advancement. The pursuit of social-economic success is also informed and inspired by legendary runners who have become powerful role models in the local communities.

The powerful desire and pursuit for athletic success has come to be identified with Kenyan running. This collective pursuit for running success has now become a popular culture. It is, therefore, not surprising that when you think of Kenyan running, what comes to mind are the lanky, lighted footed and slender runners lifting their hands in the air as they cross the finish line at major marathons and other distance running events around the world. Many of the world’s best marathon runners come from a highland region in the Rift Valley of Kenya. So if you ever wonder where the heart of running truly beats? Look no further than Kenya. This East African nation isn't just known for its incredible landscapes and wildlife; it's a powerhouse of running talent, a place where running isn't just a sport, it's a way of life. And at Enda, we're deeply inspired by this rich running culture.

More Than Just a Shoe: A Story Woven with Kenyan Threads

Enda, which is a Kiswahili word meaning ‘go’, isn't just another running shoe brand. We're built on the belief that running can empower communities and create positive change. We're the first Kenyan running shoe company, and we're proud to infuse every aspect of our brand with the spirit and culture of Kenyan running.

  • Inspired by long line of Champions: From the legendary Nyandika Maiyoro in the 1950s, Naftali Temu in 1960s, Kipchoge Keino in the 1970s and now Eliud Kipchoge in the early twenty first century, and to the countless everyday runners who grace the trails of Iten (the "Home of Champions") and other places in the country, Kenyan runners embody resilience, dedication, and a deep connection to the sport. We channel this spirit into the design and performance of our shoes.

  • Built for Kenyan Terrain: Kenya's diverse landscapes, (from the high-altitude training grounds of the Rift Valley around Iten, Eldoret, Nandi, Mount Elgon, Kericho, Nyandarua and Kisii to the dusty trails of the savannah in Narok and the Nyika plains to the white sand beaches along the Indian ocean coastline), demand shoes that can handle it all. We design our shoes to be durable, comfortable, and performant on any terrain, whether you're tackling a competitive race or simply taking a jog at leisurely pace for your own personal fitness and enjoyment.

  • Colors of Kenya: Our shoes aren't just about performance; they're a celebration of Kenyan culture. We use vibrant colors inspired by the Kenyan flag, the landscapes, and the rich cultural heritage of the country also known as the cradle of mankind.

Running with Purpose: Giving Back to the Community

At Enda, we are purpose driven. We put premium value on our connection to Kenya which goes beyond inspiration and design. We're committed to giving back to the community that has inspired the Enda brand and the diverse designs. We therefore prioritize the following:

  • Made in Kenya: We're proud to manufacture our shoes in Kenya, creating jobs and supporting the local economy.

  • Investing in Kenyan Athletes: A portion of every sale goes towards supporting Kenyan athletes and promoting running development programs in the country. Through the Enda Foundation, we are committed to supporting community development initiatives that are aligned with our strategic priorities. Through this foundation, we mobilize resources as well as efforts to build a global community of Enda that actively engages in community development initiatives.

  • Sharing the Kenyan Running Story: We're passionate about sharing the stories of Kenyan runners with the world, inspiring others to embrace the joy of running and the power of human potential.

  • Supporting initiatives in Africa that highlight the current and future potential of various causes including women’s leadership, creative industries, technology, infrastructure, tourism, sustainability, finance, and more.
