It was pomp and glamour for Kenyans this past weekend at the London marathon after Joyecline Jepkosgei bagged her second world marathon major series. Jepkosgei who won the 2019 New York City led through 40Km to win the marathon. Sweet Victory and a massive personal best of 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 43 seconds. Ethiopians Degitu and Ashete Bekere came close but Jepkosgei a woman of indomitable spirit did not back down.
Defending champion Brigid Kosgei from Kenya dropped from the pack of four just after passing the 30km mark in 1:37.29 as Jepkosgei took over. Azimeraw settled second in 2:17:58 as Bekere came third in 2:18:18 with Kosgei romping home fourth in 2:18.40. Jepkosgei, who was only running her third marathon, now becomes the seventh fastest woman ever over the distance, having won in New York in 2:22:38.
In the men’s race, the Ethiopians denied Kenya their win after Ethiopian Sisay swiftly moved past Kenya’s Vincent Kichumba in the last seven kilometers to win in 2 hours, 04 minutes, and 01 seconds on Sunday. Sisay who won his first major world marathon majors on Sunday finished third in 2020 and seventh in 2016., it was an Ethiopian victory but Kenyans Jepkosgei and Evans chebet who was fourth put up a fight.
